The free tier is not a trick

It is a real cloud
Networking, block storage, managed databases, Kubernetes — the fundamentals are present and they work. What you sacrifice is ecosystem breadth. Need an obscure managed service, or a Stack Overflow answer at 2am? AWS remains the safer bet and we will say so.
Why buy rather than sign up?
Because OCI’s signup has a reputation and it is deserved. Card verification fails opaquely. Accounts land under review for reasons never communicated. Some regions refuse new signups outright. Honest limitations
- ARM capacity is not always instantly available in every region. Confirm your region with us before ordering.
- The ecosystem is thinner — fewer tutorials, fewer integrations, fewer people who have hit your exact problem.
- Your software must run on ARM to capture the value. Most modern stacks do; some legacy ones emphatically do not.
- The console is idiosyncratic. It is fine. It is not delightful.

Most often: a developer who wanted a permanently free, genuinely useful server and found Oracle is the only provider offering one that is not a toy. The second pattern is cost-driven and unsentimental: a team runs the numbers on Ampere, finds price-per-core materially better than any hyperscaler quote, and moves the compute-heavy part of the stack across while leaving the rest alone. That hybrid approach is often the smartest version of this decision — you are not betting the company on OCI, you are simply declining to overpay for cores.

If your team has no ARM experience and no appetite to acquire any, if you depend on a managed service Oracle does not offer, or if you need a large community of people who have already solved your problem, then the saving is not worth the friction. Look at AWS or DigitalOcean instead.
The value here is real and it is conditional. Anyone selling you an OCI account while implying it is a drop-in replacement for a hyperscaler is not being honest about what you are buying.
Free tier, and the trap inside it
The always-free allocation is genuinely generous, and it has one edge people fall off. The moment you exceed it, billing begins — quietly, without ceremony, and often without anyone noticing for a fortnight.
Set a budget alert on day one even though the account is free. It takes four minutes, and it is the difference between “we ran a free server for a year” and “why is there an invoice”.
